Over the last few weeks, much of CORE’s advocacy work has focused on influencing the EU non-financial reporting reforms. All of the amendments that the European Coalition for Corporate Justice put forward to strengthen the proposal have been tabled by at least one political group, and some have the support of multiple groups. So even though negotiations are only starting and groups will have to compromise, we’re hopeful that the European Parliament position will strengthen the Commission’s proposal and take up some of our demands.
In the meantime, the signals coming from the European Council are still alarming. There is a big risk that the Council could substantially weaken the proposal, with a couple of states rallying opposition, and the supporters struggling to gain traction with other delegations. Many delegations are silent – they don’t seem to have major concerns with a regulation on NFR, but are happy to see the requirements made more flexible for businesses in their country. ECCJ recently sent a letter to all Council delegations, focussing on the key issues that are being debated in the Council, and especially the damaging changes to the proposal that we would like to see rejected.
